What is DanceSpec?

DanceSpec is a dance competition for primary and high school dance programs only, run by Stardom Productions. Public, private, independent and Catholic schools are all welcome.

When and where is DanceSpec 2026?

At Abbotsleigh, 1666 Pacific Hwy, Wahroonga. Primary school troupes compete on Saturday 8 August 2026. High school troupes and the Student Choreography Showcase are on Sunday 9 August 2026.

When do entries open and close?

Entries open on 1 January and close on 30 June 2026. Schools register through TryBooking.

Which genres can we enter?

Troupes can enter jazz, lyrical, contemporary, musical theatre / Broadway jazz and hip hop. Duos, trios and quartets can enter jazz, hip hop, lyrical and contemporary. The genre guide explains what adjudicators look for in each style.

What are the age divisions?

Troupes compete in Primary K–2, Primary Years 3–4, Primary Years 5–6, High School Years 7–9 and High School Open Age. Duos, trios and quartets compete in Years 7 & 8, Years 9 & 10 and Years 11 & 12. Age is set by the eldest dancer in the group.

Is there a division just for public schools?

Yes. When you enter, you can choose the Public Schools Only troupe division. Public schools can still enter the overall division if they prefer.

What is the Student Choreography Showcase?

A section for high school students to present their own choreography and get feedback from the adjudicators. It isn't placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Awards recognise specific choreographic elements instead. There are Junior (Years 7–10) and Senior (Years 11–12) divisions, with sections for a soloist, a duo, trio or quartet, and a troupe of five or more.

How much does it cost to enter?

Troupe entries are $95. In the duo, trio, quartet and student choreography events, solos are $50, duos, trios and quartets are $60 and troupes are $70. Every entry includes footage of the routine, sent by email link.

How much are spectator tickets?

On troupe days, an all-day pass is $25 for adults and $15 for children or concession. On duo, trio, quartet and choreography days it's $15 and $10. See prices for the full list.

What are the time limits?

Troupes have 5 minutes. Solos, duos, trios and quartets have 3 minutes. Routines that run over get a written report only and can't be placed or scored.

How are routines scored?

Adjudicators use the Stardom Productions scoring system: technical ability 35%, performance quality 35%, choreography 20%, and props and presentation 10%. The scoring page has the full criteria.

Can parents film or take photos?

No. Video recording and photography aren't allowed, and a school found recording a routine will be disqualified. Troupe entries include footage of the routine, emailed within 7 days.

Can parents go into the change rooms?

No. Only teachers go backstage and into the change rooms, and every teacher who needs access must supply a WWCC at registration.

Where do we park?

Abbotsleigh has limited parking at Gate 1A, Ada Avenue, but not enough for troupe days. Allow time to park on nearby streets such as Ada Avenue, Lucinda Avenue and The Glade, then walk in.

Can we get a refund?

Entry fees aren't refunded after entries close unless you provide a doctor's certificate.
